- The process by which a seed begins to grow, usually producing a young plant. Figuratively, it refers to the beginning or gradual development of an idea, movement, project, or other phenomenon. Related: sprouting, growth, development, beginning.
- SEEDLING /ˈsiːdlɪŋ/ · noun
- A seedling is a young plant that has germinated from a seed, especially one raised for transplanting. Figuratively, it can refer to a new idea, business, or project in an early stage of development. Related: sprout, sapling, shoot, plantlet.
- SAPWOOD /ˈsæp.wʊd/ · noun
- The soft, outer portion of a tree's secondary wood, usually lighter in color than the heartwood and containing living tissue that transports water and minerals. It lies beneath the inner bark and is most prominent in younger parts of the trunk and branches. Related: alburnum, outer wood, living wood.
- HEARTWOOD /ˈhɑːt.wʊd/ · noun
- The central, generally darker and harder portion of a tree's trunk and branches, consisting chiefly of older xylem that has ceased to transport sap. It contrasts with the younger, softer outer wood called sapwood. Related: duramen, corewood, inner wood.
- CANOPY /ˈkænəpi/ · noun
- An overhead cover or roof-like structure, especially one of fabric stretched over a bed, throne, or doorway, or the uppermost layer of branches and leaves in a forest. Related: awning, covering, shade, marquee.

- The layer of vegetation that grows beneath the canopy of a forest, including shrubs, young trees, ferns, herbs, and other low-growing plants. The term can also refer more broadly to the forest's lower vegetation layer. Related: undergrowth, underbrush, underwood, brush.
- FOREST /ˈfɒrɪst/ (UK), /ˈfɔːrɪst/ (US) · noun
- A large area of land covered with trees and undergrowth, especially one thick enough to form an ecosystem of its own; also, historically in Britain, land reserved for royal hunting. Related: woods, woodland, timberland, grove.
