- A soft, silvery antifriction alloy of tin or lead with copper and antimony (or other metals), used to line bearings and reduce friction between moving parts. The word also refers, by extension from Sinclair Lewis's 1922 novel, to a complacent, materially minded businessperson who conforms uncritically to conventional middle-class values.
