- DIGESTION /daɪˈdʒɛstʃən/ · noun
- The process by which the body breaks down food into smaller components that can be absorbed and used for energy, growth, and repair. More broadly, the act of mentally absorbing or processing information. Related: assimilation, absorption, metabolism, breakdown.
- ABSORPTION /əbˈzɔːrpʃən/ · noun
- The process by which one thing takes in or soaks up another, whether a liquid, gas, light, or information; also the state of being completely engrossed in something. Related: assimilation, uptake, soaking up, engrossment.
- ESOPHAGUS /ɪˈsɒf.ə.ɡəs/ · noun
- The muscular tube that connects the throat (pharynx) to the stomach, through which swallowed food and liquid pass. Related: gullet, oesophagus, food pipe, swallowing tube.
