A short history

The American holiday traces back to 1621, when the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag shared a three-day harvest feast. For a long time after that it was a patchwork of local days of thanks, until Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving in 1863, in the middle of the Civil War. It now falls on the fourth Thursday of November. Canada keeps its own Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October.
